Scenarios Forum 2019

The Scenarios Forum will take place from 11 to 13 March 2019 in Denver, CO. The goal of the Scenarios Forum is to bring together a diverse set of communities who are using or developing scenarios for use in climate change and sustainability analysis to:

exchange experiences, ideas, and lessons learned

identify opportunities for synergies and collaboration

identify knowledge gaps for future research.

By taking stock of progress and facilitating further scenario-related research, this meeting will inform the use of scenarios in the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It will also help ensure a research base sufficient to inform future national and international assessments as well as policy initiatives, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

An important, but not exclusive, focus of the meeting is the ongoing process of developing and using the so-called "scenarios framework" for fostering integrated climate change and sustainability research. As part of that framework, climate models have simulated alternative climate outcomes driven by the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), and a new set of societal futures, the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), has been developed and used by integrated assessment models to produce a first set of global energy, land use, and emissions scenarios based on them.

The meeting is presented by the International Committee on New Integrated Climate change assessment Scenarios (ICONICS) and the Frederick S. Pardee Center for International Futures.

3rd Open European Day at Resilient Cities 2016

EEA and ICLEI joined forces again this year to organize the 3rd Open European Day (OED), taking place on the 5th July, back-to-back with the Bonn Resilient Cities Conference.

 Thematic Focus

The thematic focuses of this year reflect the needs flagged by participants in the past editions and revolve around cutting-edge adaptation solutions and trends.

 These are:

Climate services, involving the production, transfer and use of climate knowledge, but also tools, methods and instruments to enable climate-informed decision-making. Climate services are increasingly important to support cities in becoming climate-resilient.

Nature-based solutions, providing numerous benefits to cities and their inhabitants, if planned correctly.

Mainstreaming adaptation by integrating different local planning processes and exploiting co-benefits and opportunities for combining climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

Financing adaptation as a means of making good adaptation solutions viable and of creating a window of opportunity for change in cities will be a cross-cutting theme during the event and be reflected upon in the sessions on topical themes.

For more information and for registration, visit the official event's page.

European Geosciences Union, General assembly 2016

European Geosciences Union, General assembly: Interdisciplinary Approaches in Climatic Change Research and Assessment will take place in Vienna from 17 to 22 April 2016.

Adequate response to the challenges associated with climate change requires new formats of scientific research and assessment. In the past, linear approaches, starting from the recognition of climate change, through the analysis of observed or expected impacts and ending with policy recommendations, have been the mainstream. It is now widely recognised that these approaches mostly fail to reach their objectives since they do not account for feedbacks between the physical environment and societal action, nor for the feedbacks in the various subsystems. The objective of this session is to review and discuss the problem of climatic change in all its dimensions, with a special focus on interdisciplinary approaches. Climate change science concerns a number of disciplines, such as physics, biology, economics, social sciences etc. It is essential that new forms for interact between disciplines are found in order to produce innovative results.

We do not expect to cover all the aspects of the climate change science but we hope that as well researchers in physical and natural sciences than researchers in social sciences will find interest to participate at the session to present and discuss a few exciting issues within one of several of these scopes (and more):

	- The link between global climate scenarios and the socio-economic developments

	- Scenarios for impact studies: from global to local

	- Climate services: the relation between scientists and stakeholders

	- Ecosystem services: outputs from ecosystems, challenges and responses

	- Climate – societal interactions in the last millennia: can we learn from past experience?

	- Socio-ecosystems, towards a comprehensive approach to sustainability Science

	- The climate change policies to mitigate climatic change

	- Climatic change and biodiversity

	- How to couple physical, ecological and socio-economic models

	- Peoples' perception of risk, how to improve communication

	- Sea level change and the problems of low lying areas.

	Information: http://egu2016.eu/information/general_information.html

The call for abstracts for the EGU 2016 General Assembly is now open: make sure to submit your abstract by 13 January 2016, 13:00 CET. If you would like to apply for funding from the EGU to attend, please submit your abstract within the next few days, by 1 December. This month the EGU has also open a call for proposals for EGU 2016 co-sponsored meetings and has announced a new grant scheme for EGU members interested in developing an outreach and public engagement project.

2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference

In 2015, France will be hosting and presiding the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11), otherwise known as "Paris 2015" from November 30th to December 11th.

COP21 will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C. France will therefore be playing a leading international role to ensure points of view converge and to facilitate the search for consensus by the United Nations, as well as within the European Union, which has a major role in climate negotiations.

4th EEEN Forum: Knowledge from Climate & Environment Policy Evaluation

The Florence School of Regulation Climate (FSR-Climate) of the European University Institute (EUI) will host the 4th EEEN Forum on 17 & 18 September 2015 in Florence (Italy). The 2015 EEEN forum aims at drawing lessons from climate & environment policy evaluation, supporting the road from the climate summit in Paris to 2050.

The purpose of the International Environmental Evaluators Network (EEN) is to advance the practice, policy and theory of evaluating environmental programmes, policies and other interventions.
World Symposium on Climate Change Adaption (WSCCA-2015)

The World Symposium on Climate Change Adaption (WSCCA-2015) will take place from 2 to 4 September 2015 in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Climate change is among the major challenges of modern times. As the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shown, there are still many challenges ahead and many needs to be met, calling from action not only from government, but also from various stakeholders.

Apart from the knowledge offered by modelling and forecasts which allows us to understand the problem and how it develops in the future, we need to know more about approaches, methods and tools, which may help us to cope with the social, economic and political problems posed by climate change now. In order words, we need to speed up developments in the field of climate change adaptation.

It is against this background that the "World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation" is being organised. The event is a joint initiative by Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences" of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the Baltic University Programme in Uppsala (Sweden), in cooperation with the International Climate Change Information Programme (ICCIP) and the United Nations University initiative "Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development" (RCE). The Symposium will be a truly interdisciplinary event, covering some of the key areas in the field of climate change adaptation.

The "World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation" will focus on "innovative approaches to implement climate change adaptation", and will contribute to the further development of this fast-growing field.

Green Week 2015

The 2015 edition of Green Week, the biggest annual conference on European environment policy, will take place from 3 to 5 June at The Egg Conference Centre, Rue Bara, in Brussels. The theme will be nature and biodiversity.

Nature is vital for our health and our wealth. We depend on it for the food, energy, raw materials, air and water that make life possible and drive the economy. We share this planet with an extraordinary natural diversity which is a source of inspiration, learning and recreation; part of our cultural heritage and contributing to our quality of life. Protecting nature and maintaining Europe's competitiveness must go hand-in-hand as nature and biodiversity policy can play a key role in creating jobs and stimulating investment.

Green Week will look at these and other benefits we receive from nature, and the framework in place to protect it. Green Week offers a unique opportunity for debate and exchanges of experience and best practice. Over the past decade, the conference has established itself as an unmissable event for anyone involved with protecting the environment. The 2014 edition attracted around 3.100 participants from government, business and industry, non-governmental organisations, academia and the media.

The JPI Climate Workshop: "Improving knowledge for enhanced climate change response and decision-making"will take place on 21 - 22 April 2015 at the JPI Climate Central Secretariat, Brussels, Belgium.

Within the intergovernmental initiative JPI Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe (JPI Climate) launched in 2011 fourteen European countries have now committed to coordinate their activities in the field of climate research by implementing a jointly developed Strategic Research Agenda. JPI Climate contributes with its common efforts to the overall EU objective of developing and strengthening the European Research Area. It supports excellent science and multilateral cooperation focusing on giving answers to climate change, societal circumstances and changes. The integration across the sciences is part of JPI Climate working concept which aims at fostering cross-border and cross-disciplinary research and science-practice interaction. Climate Knowledge refers both to the creation of knowledge and the use of knowledge or knowledge uptake.

Climate Knowledge being at the heart of the initiative JPI Climate covers the whole spectrum from creation of knowledge to the use of it in terms of impact on societal change within its various action fields. This upcoming workshop on "Improving knowledge for enhanced climate change response and decision-making" will explore the mechanisms of influencing decision making in order to better understand how knowledge needs to be provided and conveyed in order to finally result in relevant action in the face of climate change.

The climate change challenge: the outcome of the IPCC 5th assessment report

How will EU society, and indeed individual EU citizens, react, adapt and generally cope with the impacts of the coming changes to the world’s climate? What can its elected representatives and policy-makers do on the world stage?

Answers to such questions will be outlined in a special event at the European Parliament (EP) as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presents the latest findings from its 5th Assessment Report (AR5). The IPCC’s Chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, will present the key findings from the IPCC’s report, hot off the press, and take part in a Q&A session at the European Parliament to debate the report’s contents.

The event, organised by the European Commission in partnership with the EP’s own Scientific Foresight Unit, gives the first chance for EU citizens, legislators and policy-makers to discuss the contents of the AR5 at the heart of European government.

The High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes (HELIX) project, in co-operation with Climate Outreach & Information Network (COIN), organises a one-day workshop "Communicating Climate Change: A workshop to gain confidence, experience and knowhow", whch will take place on 22 Oct 2014 in London, UK.

Researchers and academics researching climate change face challenges in effectively communicating their work to the public. Levels of public concern have dropped, some political and media discourse has shifted towards cynicism, and trust in climate scientists has taken a knock. Researchers themselves seem unsure or unconfident about how best to communicate with non-academics, further undermining public trust and engagement.

This one-day workshop is primarily for early career researchers in the physical, natural and social sciences. It provides the opportunity to learn more about effectively communicating climate change science to engage non-academic audiences by gaining confidence and knowhow through task-based training in understanding your audiences and practicing skills. The evnt aims to:

Provide an introduction to the social and political context of communicating climate change as well as specific tips and guidance for researchers

Increase the confidence and capacity of climate change researchers to effectively engage the public

Initiate a new network of early-career researchers who can provide peer-support for each other in the future

Leading the day will be Asher Minns, Communication Manager at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, and Adam Corner, Research Director for COIN and Associate of Cardiff University’s Department of Psychology

To apply for a place, please send a brief note describing your own experience and challenges in climate communication, to Asher Minns at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia a.minns@uea.ac.uk. Please can I have your applications by October 01st. Funding for travel is unavailable.

UN Climate Summit 2014

Climate change is not a far-off problem. It is happening now and is having very real consequences on people’s lives. Climate change is disrupting national economies, costing us dearly today and even more tomorrow. But there is a growing recognition that affordable, scalable solutions are available now that will enable us all to leapfrog to cleaner, more resilient economies.

There is a sense that change is in the air. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited world leaders, from government, finance, business, and civil society to Climate Summit 2014 this 23 September in New York to galvanize and catalyze climate action. He has asked these leaders to bring bold announcements and actions to the Summit that will reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and mobilize political will for a meaningful legal agreement in 2015. Climate Summit 2014 provides a unique opportunity for leaders to champion an ambitious vision, anchored in action that will enable a meaningful global agreement in 2015.

Third Nordic International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (Copenhagen, Denmark)

The Third Nordic International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (nordicadaptation2014.net) is a follow-up to the highly successful conferences in Stockholm (2010) and Helsinki (2012) and aims to bring together scientists, practitioners and policy-makers with a particular interest in the Nordic region.

As highlighted in consecutive reports from the IPCC, there is overwhelming scientific evidence that anthropogenic climate change is taking place and the chances are high that future climate is going to change even more than what has already been realised. Impacts of changes over recent decades are likewise visible throughout the Nordic region, manifested e.g. through observed changes in the hydrological cycle, reductions in sea ice cover, lengthening growing seasons and the occurrence and strength of heavy rain events. Adaptation to these changes is already high on the agenda in the Nordic and international societies. However, science is providing new information on changes and their consequences, which calls for a wider dialogue to enable adjustments of already initiated adaptation plans as well as providing the baseline knowledge for future initiatives.

The conference "Adapting to Change: From Research to Decision-making" like its two predecessors seeks to advance existing common ground between scientists, practitioners and decision-makers and establish new ways forward for informed adaptation.

The conference is targeted at scholars as well as private and public practitioners and decision-makers at strategic and operational levels and across a wide range of disciplines and sectors. This includes researchers and professionals within the fields of climate change, climate change impacts and adaptation, students, regional and local planners, business strategists and risk managers and policy-makers as well as representatives of NGO’s and Nordic/international organizations. While some sessions will have a definite Nordic focus, the conference - just like the field of climate change adaptation is by no means restricted to the Nordic region. We cordially invite and strongly encourage international participants to join and share their experiences.

The deadline for abstract submission has been extended until April 15, 2014.

The second circular may be downloaded here
